The Williston Park Little League 9/10 year-old Tournament Team remained undefeated this past Saturday (October 19th) in the 24-team Diamond Pro’s Fall Tournament. The doubleheader sweep against North Riverdale from the Bronx advanced the team to 12-0 in the Fall Tournament and secured 1st Place and home field advantage throughout the Playoffs. The team now advances into the Diamond Pro’s best 2-of-3 American League Division Series, which is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 26th, at Kelleher Field.

The 9/10 Tournament team is now 25-4 during the 2002 Tournament Season, which includes the Williston Park Mayor’s Trophy Championship and the Glen Cove Mayor’s Trophy Championship.

In the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, Williston Park jumped off to an early 1-0 lead, with a single by Casey Cunningham, a walk to Chris Serrano, and a double steal which resulted in a run. With the game 1-0 in the 3rd, Williston Park scrapped for another run on an overthrow of 3rd base, which allowed Danny Martinucci to score from 3rd to advance the lead to 2-0. North Riverdale threatened in the 4th, with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but Williston Park got out of the jam, to seal the 2-0 victory. The game also included the 13-strikeout pitching performance of Chris Serrano and the strong defense of John Quinn and Tommy Ward.

In the second game, Williston Park erupted for 7 runs in the 2nd inning behind RBI singles by Matt Goodrich, Jimmy Bulva, Peter Aiello, and Casey Cunningham; an RBI double by Mark Scaringi; and a bases-loaded 2-RBI double off the top of the centerfield fence at Kelleher by Chris Serrano. North Riverdale tightened the score to 7-2 in the 4th, but Williston Park locked up the 11-2 victory with two runs in each of the last 2 innings on singles by Matt Lanfair, Danny Martinucci, and Jimmy Ward; and a 2-RBI double by Casey Cunningham. The game also featured the strong pitching of Casey Cunningham and Danny Martinucci; a diving catch by Matt “hot dog” Lanfair in the 4th, and the fine defense of Nick Berardi.

In other Williston Park Little League news, Melissa Lanfair, of the WPLL Girls Softball Division, participated on a local tournament team, which won the 2002 Diamond Pro’s Girls Softball Championship this past weekend.
